Why Miami University?
I chose Miami for its strong academic reputation and the chance to grow as a student while staying close to my family. My brother is also an alumni.
How did you choose your major?
Psychological Science called to me because it bridges my curiosity about the human mind, and I wanted to study a field that could make a real difference in people’s lives. Every class feels like a step toward that purpose.
How have any faculty, staff, or mentors at the University played a significant role in your journey?
Dr. Barbara Oswald has guided me through my time at Miami with incredible support, both as my advisor and as an inspiring instructor, which has driven my passion for this field of study and research. Dr. Elliot Jardin has been a huge mentor to me in his Brain Health and Cognition Lab, always encouraging my growth in research.
Other Notable Experience
One of my most significant experiences was presenting our lab’s pilot study on metacognitive learning strategies at the AURCO 2025 Conference with my lab partner and now best friend, Madison Roberts. What began as a research collaboration grew into both professional growth and an unexpected friendship that I will forever be grateful for.
Advice to Prospective Students
Follow your curiosity! Even if it doesn’t feel like a straight path. Be open to unexpected opportunities; some of my best experiences came from stepping outside my comfort zone. And don’t forget: being kind to yourself is just as important as being kind to others. Growth isn’t linear.
How has your involvement on campus shaped you as a leader and/or prepared you for your career?
My involvement in the Psychological Science Club has taught me how to collaborate with peers and organize events, and pushed me out of my comfort zone. In the lab, I’ve gained hands-on experience in cognitive research, deepening my drive to build pathways between science and real-world interventions.
How has Miami provided you with opportunities to engage in research, partnerships, or experiences that shaped your way of thinking?
Miami provided me with unparalleled research opportunities. Dr. Oswald’s Research & Design Analysis II course was the first time research truly clicked for me. Dr. Oswald was always available with guidance, patient with my questions, and genuinely invested in my growth. Additionally, working in Dr. Jardin's lab, where I progressed from assisting studies to co-presenting at AURCO 2025 — work that earned me the Excellence in Research Award at the 2025 Social and Behavioral Sciences Department Award Ceremony. These experiences reshaped how I view psychology: not solely as theories in textbooks, but as a dynamic, evidence-driven discipline that requires creativity and rigor.
