Joseph “Joe” ’65 and Sarah Marcum.  Joe earned his M.B.A. from Miami in 1965.  He had completed his undergraduate degree in Business from Antioch College in 1947. Joe also holds an honorary Miami degree.  Sarah is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College in New York. (Note: According to old records, Sarah attended Miami in 1941 before going to Sarah Lawrence).

After graduating from Antioch, Joe joined the insurance company Ohio Casualty Corporation as a sales trainee.  He then served the firm as secretary, vice president and executive vice president, playing a key role in the firm’s development of its life insurance business.  He was named president in 1978 and chairman and CEO in 1988. He served as president until December 31, 1990 and CEO until the end of 1993.  Joe retired in 2000 due to a mandatory retirement policy.  In 1997, Liberty Mutual Group acquired Ohio Casualty for $2.7 billion.

Long a prominent leader and contributor in the insurance industry, Joe’s career also included positions as past president and founding trustee of the Ohio Insurance Institute, a trustee of the American Institute for Property & Liability Underwriters and the Insurance Institute of America, and a past director of the Insurance Services Office.

The Marcums have been very involved in the greater Hamilton Community.  Their extensive civic activities have included the Rotary Club of Hamilton, the Hamilton Bicentennial Commission, the Boys Club of Hamilton, the Fort Hamilton Hospital, the Hamilton Community Foundation, Lane Public Library, New London Hills Country Club, United Way, local public television and the United Way.  Their activities outside of Hamilton include membership in the Walloon Lake Association and have attended many Tip of the Mitt events.

Joe’s honors and awards have included: a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce (1994), Executive Order of the Ohio Commodores (highest honor in the state of Ohio (1992), Junior Achievement of Butler County Business Hall of Fame (1992), Gamma Iota Sigma honorary member and Beta Gamma Sigma honorary member.

One of the Marcum’s five children, Joseph Timothy “Tim” Marcum ‘73, died in a car accident shortly after graduating from Miami.  The Marcum Conference Center, as well as the surrounding Memorial Nature Trail are named for him.  The Marcums commissioned a friend of Tim’s to paint his portrait.  It now hangs on the first floor of the conference center.

The Marcums four other children are Catharine “Cammy” Lowe, M. Christina “Christy” Manchester, Sarah Shuffield and Stephen Marcum.  They are not Miami alums.  Among them, they have twelve grandchildren (some are Miami grads) and many live in Hamilton, OH.
