Sue Henry '73 and Carter Phillips Student Activities Suite

A $350,000 pledge from Sue Henry '73 and Carter Phillips of McLean, Va., has named the Sue Henry and Carter Phillips Student Activities Suite within Miami University's new Armstrong Student Center.

Henry, a national trustee on Miami’s board of trustees, chairs the board’s Academic and Student Affairs committee. She formerly served of counsel for Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C., and as an assistant professor of law at the University of Illinois. She has actively served Miami as a member of the College of Arts and Science advisory board and as the first chair of the pre-law advisory council. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Miami in political science, law degree from Northwestern University and master'sActivities Suite of law degree from Georgetown University.

Phillips is the managing partner of the Washington, D.C., office of Sidley Austin, LLP. In 2010, he was named one of “The Decade’s Most Influential Lawyers” by The National Law Journal. Phillips formerly served as a law clerk for Chief Justice Warren E. Burger of the U.S. Supreme Court and as an assistant to the U.S. Solicitor General. He has argued more cases before the Supreme Court of the United States as a private litigator than any other living lawyer. He is a graduate of Ohio State University who also earned his law degree from Northwestern.

“We are thrilled to have an opportunity to help Miami grow for the future and to provide a wonderful resource for generations of students to continue to engage in learning, thinking, working, creating, socializing and growing together,” said Henry. “It is our honor to sponsor the student activities suite, and we do so for love of Miami.”

“Sue Henry’s unwavering leadership is evident by her role as a trustee and the numerous advisory positions she holds. Sue and Carter have a deep understanding of the importance of the opportunity for students to interact, collaborate and lead,” noted David Hodge, President of Miami University. “Their wonderful gift will greatly enhance the Miami experience and better prepare our students for exceptional careers and lives.”

An important element of the Armstrong Student Center’s leadership emphasis, the Sue Henry and Carter Phillips Student Activities Suite is located within the two-story Center for Student Engagement and Leadership (SEAL), which will provide meeting and workspace for Miami’s more than 400 student-led groups. The suite will house eight offices for the advisers and staffs of multiple student organizations, as well as a conference room.
