Passive House: Malta

May-June, odd numbered years, Germany and Malta

The program begins with a one week stay in Freiburg, Germany where students will be introduced to the concepts of Passive House and begin study of the energy modeling software WUFI-PASSIVE and hygrothermal modeling tool THERM. Students will tour net-zero and solar communities to see energy efficiency developed on a regional scale.

Students will then travel to the island of Malta where we will apply the principles learned in Germany to the climate and culture of Malta. We will spend one week in the walled city of Valletta, where we will learn about the history of Malta and traditional building methods. We then travel to the small island of Gozo for two weeks and begin project design work. Our last week is spent in the city of St. Julian, back on the main island of Malta where we complete our design work.

This workshop is suitable for architecture and interior design students interested in sustainability and energy efficiency.
