About the English Language Learner Writing Center

The English Language Learner Writing Center (ELLWC) provides one-on-one consulting to undergraduate and graduate student writers who are multilingual. Through collaborative peer interaction, supportive and well-trained consultants help students whose first language is not English become more confident users of English academic language and effective, autonomous writers across genres and disciplines. The ELLWC ensures opportunities for student writers to understand and practice multiple proofreading, self-editing, and polishing strategies as well as improve their English language skills necessary for achieving academic and professional success.

The ELLWC also collaborates with the faculty across Miami University about how to work effectively with multilingual writers.

Syllabus Statement for the English Language Learner Writing Center

Faculty can include the following statement from the ELLWC about services on their syllabi:

The Howe Writing Center (HWC) and English Language Learner Writing Center (ELLWC) recognize that all writers have more to learn and provide free support to Miami students and alumni. The HWC offers help with academic, personal, and professional writing at any stage in the writing process, from brainstorming to polishing. The ELLWC offers more specialized help for students whose first language is not English, and who need particular assistance with grammar, word usage, style, and punctuation. Neither the HWC nor the ELLWC will edit your work; both will help students develop better strategies for invention, revision, and self-editing. Please visit our websites for more information, and to sign up for either on-campus appointments (HWC and ELLWC) or online appointments.
