Student Technology Fee

A pool of funds from the Student Technology Fee has been created to stimulate the development of innovative student-focused technology projects on the Oxford campus. The Student Technology Fee funds programs and services that support students in achieving their academic program goals and enhance their life at Miami.

Any student, faculty member, staff member, group or department on the Oxford campus may submit a proposal. Proposals must be submitted in accordance with the approved tech fee guidelines for expenditures (below).

The funds are divided into three pools, as follows:

  • Ongoing Student Services: Provides funds to keep technology in classrooms up to date, fund positions dedicated to student support, pay wages for IT Services student staff, and provide maintenance for software in support of student services.
  • Dean's Allocations: This portion is allocated to the School, the Colleges, and the Libraries for each dean to respond to student technology needs in their division.
  • Competitive Proposal Process: Provides funds for the innovative student-focused technology projects submitted by students, faculty, or staff.

Divisional Allocations

The $575,000 total in divisional funds are allocated as follows:

  • Arts and Science (CAS): $195,237
  • Business (FSB): $83,990
  • Education (CEHS): $66,840
  • Engineering (CEC): $46,757
  • Creative Arts (CCA): $41,791
  • Library (LIB): $86,923
  • Student Affairs (SAF): $53,462

Competitive Proposal Awards and Process

$525,000 in technology fee funds will be awarded through the competitive proposal process: $40,000 for proposals specific to graduate student education and/or co-curricular experience, and $485,000 for proposals specific to undergraduate student education and/or co-curricular experience.

The following tech fee guidelines help determine which proposals to fund.

Use the following timeline for submitting proposals:

  • February 1, 2017: Announce Call for Proposals
  • February 27, 2017: Proposals due to Deans/VP
  • March 17, 2017: Proposals and Spending Plans due from Deans
  • March 31, 2017: Review begins
  • April 21, 2017: Reviewer scores submitted to committee chair
  • April 26, 2017: IT Review Team meets and recommendations are forwarded to IT Policy Committee
  • May 3, 2017: IT Policy Committee reviews and confirms recommendations
  • By May 12, 2017: Applicants/Div. Point Contacts notified of funding decision
  • July-August 2017: Approved Award Funding released to divisional accounts
  • August 1, 2017: Final Reports due for FY17 Divisional Allocations and Competitive Awards
  • August 1, 2018: Final Reports due for FY18 Divisional Allocations and Competitive Awards
