Professional Experience

Prior to her faculty role at Miami University, Ms. Brown’s background included high risk OB nursing, outpatient women’s health, and nursing management. She also taught and served as the Librarian for a School of Nursing. Although Ms. Brown has taught a wide variety of courses, her specialty area is Gerontological Nursing.

Ms. Brown’s service included such diverse endeavors as conducting fundraising and building a community playground service and serving on the Board of Directors of a nurse-run, HRSA funded health care center that served uninsured and underinsured clients. In the realm of public service, as an elected governing official, Ms. Brown served as Chairwoman of her local public school board. Her current service interests include involvement on a number of departmental committees, conducting Small Group Instructional Diagnoses to facilitate the evaluation of regional campus faculty members, and implementing projects to enhance the quality of life for older adults who reside in Continuing Care Retirement Communities.

Scholarship

In the area of research and scholarship, Ms. Brown actively participated in a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning group and, currently, is involved in a departmental Nursing Research community. She has conducted conference presentations on the topics of “Empowering Students through Service Learning,” “The Effects of Tardiness on Classmates’ Learning,” and “The Impact of Service Learning on the Development of Professional Competencies.”

Awards

As the recipient of grant funding, Ms. Brown is studying Incivility in Nursing Education. Future research interests include a project she is developing on the use of wheelchair quilts to increase communication among persons with dementia.
