You must meet with an academic advisor in order to discuss and prepare your petition to modify Miami Plan requirements. These instructions are for students wishing to substitute a course (transfer or taken at Miami) in place of a course approved for either the Global Miami Plan (students who entered Miami prior to Summer 2023), or the Miami Plan (students entering Miami in Fall ‘23 or after).
If you are petitioning more than one course, you must submit a separate petition for each course.
You must obtain the following to be uploaded as part of the Course Substitution Petition:

If you are petitioning a course to fulfill a Miami Plan Perspective Area or GMP Foundation you must address all of the following:
How did the course broaden your knowledge in the subject area (e.g., Social Science, Creative Arts, Global Inquiry)?
What skills did you develop?
Describe 2 assignments, activities, discussions, projects that demonstrate the knowledge and skills you gained.
If you are petitioning a course to fulfill Signature Inquiry, you must address all of the following:
How did the course broaden your knowledge in the topic area (e.g., Global Health & Wellness, Sustainability & Resilience, etc.)?
What subjects came together to help you understand the topic area?
Explain how you actively applied knowledge by describing 2 assignments, activities, discussions, projects that helped you learn.
If you are petitioning a course to fulfill Senior Capstone you must answer 4 questions:
How did you use and apply multiple sources and types of sources?
How did you apply knowledge to address real-world problems by asking questions and exploring solutions?
How did you apply knowledge gained in various courses and experiences? These should include not only courses in your major, but from your Miami Plan courses and experiences.
How did you create artifacts/deliverables that communicate your ideas to a wider audience beyond the teacher.
Degree Audit Report — Upload a newly generated DAR in PDF with your proposal. Please be sure to upload the “Printer Friendly” version of your DAR found by clicking the “Printer Friendly” link in your DAR.
Course Syllabus — In petitioning any course, including a “T” number transfer course, a syllabus must be attached to your petition. A catalog course description is not sufficient. The LDA must review the syllabus before supporting your petition.
All components of the proposal must be turned in before it will be reviewed by the Director of Liberal Education.
