Functions

The functions of the Faculty Research Committee are to promote research and scholarship at Miami University by advocating policies and procedures that strengthen initiatives to increase the quality and visibility of faculty research accomplishments; to advise the Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship on matters of policy and implementation affecting research at Miami University, and on other matters which the Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship may bring to the Committee for advice and counsel; and to evaluate proposals for summer research grants, research assistantships, and other grants in support of research, according to the policies and procedures contained in the Miami University Policy and Information Manual. The Committee shall report regularly to University Senate.

Composition

  • Ten (10) faculty members, one of whom shall serve as the Chair of the Committee and at least one of whom shall be a member of University Senate.
    • The following disciplinary groupings shall each be represented by three (3) faculty members:
      • Applied and natural sciences.
      • Business, education, and social sciences.
      • Humanities and creative arts.
    • Three (3) faculty alternates. The following disciplinary groups shall each be represented by one (1) alternate:
      • Applied and natural sciences.
      • Business, education, and social sciences.
      • Humanities and creative arts.
  • Two (2) ex officio nonvoting members:
    • The Dean of the Graduate School.
    • Representative from the Office for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship to be appointed by the Associate Provost for Research and Scholarship or his/her designee.

The Chair of the Committee and the chairs of the subcommittees shall be tenured. The Chair will oversee the work of the Committee; and will oversee the work of the subcommittees; and will not be eligible to serve on a subcommittee.
