The United States is in the throes of a major housing crisis, largely driven by gentrification. One-third of all U.S. households had unaffordable rent or mortgage payments, and at least 3.8 million available homes are needed to address the housing shortage.

On Oct 18, Steal the Street author Dr. Mark Mussman ‘01 (Western Program) will discuss Cincinnati’s homelessness and the housing crisis from his view as director of education at the Great Cincinnati Homeless Coalition. Steal the Street is a collection of his essays focused on gentrification, public space, and community voice in the greater Cincinnati area.

Mussman administers the educational component of the Homeless Coalition to educate the public about homelessness and poverty and to combat harmful stereotypes and myths about homelessness.

“We are very fortunate to welcome Dr. Mussman back to his alma mater at Miami,” said Jacqueline Daugherty, director of the Western Center for Social Impact and Innovation. “This initiative honors the rich history of social activism on the Western campus by energizing today's students with a spirit of social responsibility.”

Mussman is a community leader, instructor, education and resource designer with over ten years of education experience, including teacher education, undergraduate and graduate courses, job-readiness and technology instruction, K-12 community education, community empowerment through tours, speaking engagements, training, in-person and online.

The Western Center for Social Impact and Innovation is Miami's interdisciplinary hub for student engagement with issues of social justice within the context of global change. Programming through the Western Center encourages students and faculty from every subject area to explore complex questions and to seek solutions with community partners in the public and private sectors.

The event will take place on Tuesday, Oct 18, including:

  • Reception: 5-6 p.m in Peabody Hall 120
  • Dr. Mussman’s talk: 6-7 p.m. in Peabody Hall’s Leonard Theater

Peabody Hall is located on 724 Western College Dr, in Oxford, Ohio.

The event will also be live-streamed. Registration is required. Please register at https://alumlc.org/miamioh/22697.
