On March 21-24, nine CAS students from Miami University traveled to the National University Model Arab League (NUMAL) in Arlington, VA and came away with five awards. Competing among 21 colleges and universities, the Miami team represented the Syrian Arab Republic.

The five Miami Model Arab League winners were:

  • Omar Abaas ‘24 (Political Science and Comparative Religion) and Megan Foster ‘24 (International Studies and Human Capital Management & Leadership): Distinguished Delegation on the Council of Special Council on Increasing Diplomatic Partnerships
  • Emily Agin M.A. ‘24 (Political Science) and Micah Ball ‘24 (History): Superior Delegation on the Joint Defense Council
  • Sydney Sharp ‘24 (Political Science): Superior Delegation on the Council of Arab Environmental Affairs Ministers

Other team members include Nolan Boyea ‘25 (Quantitative Economics and Mathematics), Eli Levsky ‘24 (Political Science and International Studies), Jacquie Linden ‘24 (Diplomacy and Global Politics), and Sydney Kerlin '26 (Political Science and International Studies).

“Miami University students prepare a year in advance to compete in regional and national Model Arab League conferences,” said Shawn Vanness, team advisor and associate director of strategic communications and marketing in the Scripps Gerontology Center. “Their hard work paid off early at the regional conference, bringing home ten delegate awards and the outstanding overall delegation.”

The students also receive support from the Middle East, Jewish, and Islamic Studies faculty in the Department of Comparative Religion, the Department of Global and Intercultural Studies, and the Department of German, Russian, Asian, and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures.

Miami's Model Arab League (MAL) is an inclusive space for any student to join a team that develops leadership and diplomacy. For more information, contact Shawn Vanness at dubbersa@MiamiOH.edu or visit the MAL website on Hub.
