Physics professors "explode" the mysteries of "ghostlike" atoms
Samir Bali, professor of Physics, works with Imran Mirza, assistant professor of Physics, and groups of students in “the coldest spot in Ohio" using lasers to trap and freeze atoms in a type of “optical lattice" that can be used to build efficient nanomachines and help with quantum computing.
Bali, Mirza, and other physics faculty have recently won over $2.3M in funding from the National Science Foundation and the Defense Department for work in cutting-edge quantum technologies.
Other Faculty Accomplishments
From left to right: Oana Godeanu-Kenworthy, Kerry Hegarty, Lesley Knoll, Nicholas Money, TaraShea Nesbit
- Kerry Hegarty (Media, Journalism and Film), Nicholas Money (Biology; Individualized Studies), and Oana Godeanu-Kenworthy (Global and Intercultural Studies) all published new articles for The Conversation. Hegarty's piece delves into our darkest fears and uncovers that what scares us the most is often something very close to home, while Money sheds light on the importance of distinguishing between varieties of molds. Godeanu-Kenworthy links traditional gender roles to American values dating back to the Cold War.
- Lesley Knoll (Biology) expanded the field of wintertime lake research with her Science article entitled, "Environmental and Societal Consequences of Winter Ice Loss from Lakes."
- TaraShea Nesbit (English) was named the winner of the Outstanding First-Generation Advocate Award.
