Purpose and Description
“Creating Accessible Courses for Miami Students with Disabilities,” will support the design
of inclusive courses to increase access and support for Miami students. As a community, we
will explore answers to the following questions: What are the elements and formats of
college courses that create barriers for students with disabilities? What are the best
practices for designing a course and classroom environment in which students with
disabilities can learn and participate successfully alongside their nondisabled peers? How
might members of this FLC redesign specific courses to be accessible to all learners?
A secondary goal of this learning community is to establish a cohort of faculty whose
courses will be accessible to students in the Access Miami Program (AMP), a two to three-
year academic Associate’s degree program for students with intellectual and
developmental disabilities (IDD). With AMP, Miami University will join over 300 colleges
and universities in the United States, including 10 in Ohio, with programs designed for
students with IDD. We hope to welcome our first cohort of AMP students in the fall of 2026.
Activities
Members will:
- Examine and discuss the growing scholarship on inclusive higher education and the social and cultural barriers facing people with IDD.
- Learn from the lived experiences of students with intellectual disabilities, rather than learn about them.
- Workshop and revise a course that they regularly teach to increase accessibility for all Miami students, including students in the Access Miami Program.
