Unlocking the Joy of Reading

Advancing Reading Success Through Partnership

Miami University’s College of Education, Health, and Society (EHS) has partnered with the Institute for Multisensory Education (IMSE) to strengthen reading success in our community. Through this collaboration, Miami undergraduate and graduate students receive intensive training in the Orton-Gillingham (OG) Structured Literacy Intervention, the gold standard for supporting learners with dyslexia and other reading-related learning challenges.

Students who complete the 30-hour training earn a recognized certificate and a full K–3 curriculum kit, equipping them to teach reading with confidence and fidelity. Beyond the coursework, Miami students apply these skills directly in the community—helping learners of all ages unlock the joy of reading.

Community Partnerships

Lane Library (Oxford)

  • Hosting parent workshops to help families support struggling readers at home.
  • Developing a Children’s Reading Center with tips for parents and access to decodable readers aligned with Talawanda City Schools’ curriculum (in progress).

Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR)

  • Offering a four-week course introducing retirees to structured literacy methods and OG tools.
  • Retirees volunteer 1–2 hours weekly during the summer to provide free reading tutoring at the library’s “learning booth.”

Talawanda City Schools

  • Partnering with Kramer and Marshall Elementary Schools to provide semester-long reading tutoring for K–5 learners.
  • Many Miami student tutors implement the Orton-Gillingham approach as part of their training and community engagement.
  • This is part of the Greater Oxford Education Collaborative

This partnership not only enhances teacher preparation but also builds a network of support for readers across our community—uniting educators, families, and volunteers in the shared goal of literacy for all.
