| Americans in Berlin | Berlin has been one of the primary destinations for Americans artists, entertainers, authors , and enterpreneurs from 1920s to the present moment. Students will explore the various cultural, political, and economic dimentions of this long-lasting relationship, and will visit sites dedicated to the research and preservation of cultural memory. We will also study the role of the United States in Germany's and Berlin's unification, in the transition of the West German capital from Bonn to Berlin, and in the transformations that took place in the post-unification period. This workshop will explore these transformations through novels, films, historical accounts, museum presentations, archival materials, eye-witness accounts, public momuments, architecture tours and other visual and audio materials. | AMS 281 or GER 281 (6 credits) |

| Archives and Artifacts in London | This interdisciplinary workshop introduces students to archival and humanities research over Winter Term at the British Library and other London archives including the London School of Economics and the Wellcome Collection. The scope of the British Library's collection includes everything from ancient artifacts to British colonial records to original recordings of the Beatles, making this workshop appropriate for students doing any sort of archival or humanities-based research. London is also home to several other of the world's biggest archives; students will have the chance to visit at least three. While this workshop is open to all students working on an independent research project, it may be most appealing for students engaged in honors projects, thesis projects, capstone projects, and/or Dean's Scholar Projects as they will be able to complete significant portions of their research while participating in this workshop. This workshop is taught with extensive research experiences, at the British Library and beyond, and it will be a mixture of class work and independent research. Students will also have the opportunity to meet with London-based Miami University alumni and other guest speakers. The New York Times recently named London the best city to visit on the planet. | Belize: Healthcare Delivery in Central America | This Miami University workshop (3 to 6 credit hours) will enable students interested in nursing and other health professions to work beside physicians and healthcare workers in Belize caring for residents in rural health clinics. The students will participate in village triage by assessing communities and residents for issues that affect health in the Central American country of Belize. Students will practice the Spanish language with the assistance of local interpreters. Residents identified as requiring medical assistance and education during community visits will be seen in the neighborhood clinic the following day. Students will participate in the assessment and care of those individuals at various levels based on prior experiences and knowledge. Students will also experience the culture of Belize along with the beautiful scenery through rich cultural tours and experiences. This is an experiential opportunity that will fulfill the Miami Plan Global Citizenship: Global Inquiry and Experiential Learning requirements and the required nursing major elective. | NSG 306 (3 or 6 credits) |
| Business & Spanish in Argentina | The Program offers a unique cultural and language immersion experience for Spanish majors and minors over the course of 3 weeks in Argentina. The program provides students with an opportunity to live, experience and explore the culture, people and language in a safe and enriching academic setting abroad. The classroom is extended far beyond the confines of the physical space, as students are culturally integrated, through home-stays, into small town life in Argentina. Excursions and cultural events enhance student learning by allowing them to take a hands-on approach to their learning incorporating the knowledge and skills from the class to be applied in "real world", contextualized applications. The small rural setting of Colonial Almada, Córdoba works as catalysts for students’ language acquisition and cultural awareness, as rural towns do not have any English speakers. | SPN 341 and SPN 317 (6 credits) |
| Computers and the Homeless | Students will learn valuable IT skills incorporating Agile practices and teach a variety of skills to a multicultural population in Manchester, England. Classes will be held at the University of Manchester, and teaching sessions will be held at Justlife and other organizations working with the homeless. Housing will be in a university affiliated hotel. Evenings and weekends will include local sporting and cultural events and time to explore on your own. | CSE 448 and CSE 449 (4 credits) |
| Flora of the Bahamas | The goal of this course is to train you how to penetrate the green haze and gain an appreciation of the incredible diversity of plants that exist. In the course, you will not only learn to recognize common species and families of tropic plants, you will visit multiple habitat types, from Pine forests to Mangrove swamps to small Cays and learn methods for measuring that diversity. In addition, incorporate multiple activities and opportunities to learn more about the people and culture of the Bahamas. This program is particularly looking for students with an interest in biology, botany and/or environmental science; although, you don't need a background in botany to participate. | BIO 295 (6 credits) |
| Global Brazil: Economics & Culture from Bahia to Rio | We'll explore this dynamic economy in its historical and cultural context, and will have extensive interactions with local students and families, faculty members, and entrepreneurs. Our locations in Rio and Bahia, and day trips from them, will expose us to an important part of Brazil's diverse environments and socioeconomic structures. Cultural activities include a samba school, capoeira and percussion workshops, participating in local festivals, and iconic tourist sites like Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf, and Ipanema and Copacabana beaches. | ECO 320, ITS 390, or LAS 390 (3 credits) |
| Integrating Spanish and Health in Costa Rica | Integrating Spanish and Health provides an opportunity for students who want to build language skills, participate in experiential/service learning, explore global health care issues, and experience language / cultural immersion. Students will learn about the healthcare system in Costa Rica, visit a medical school, interact with medical professionals and interview patients, and learn about alternative treatments such as medicinal plants and natural healers. Students will have unique opportunities to gain hands-on experience and learn first-hand about the host country’s culture, history and geography while developing their Spanish proficiency. Students will complete online assignments and conversations prior to and after the work and class time in Costa Rica. | Italy: Visions & Contrasts | This study abroad program takes place in Florence (Italy) with a trip to Siena. The workshop offers a cultural immersion in food and art cultures through a combination of classroom work, small group collaborative projects, and experiential learning activities conducted on location, inside and outside the classroom. Through visiting museums, taking food classes and tours, analyzing Italian films, and writing about your own travel experience, you will develop your cultural knowledge of Italy and build skills in intercultural communication. | Life in Peru 3 Credit Option | In this course, students will have the opportunity to explore physiological realities and culture of people living in Peru. This includes modern Peruvians as well as the the Incans. Altitude has acute effects on human physiology but also influences culture because of available resources because of its effects on farming, livestock and surrounding environment. We will examine Incan culture as we visit various Inca ruins and holy sites. Altitude has acute effects on human physiology but also influences culture because of available resources because of its effects on farming, livestock and surrounding environment. We will examine Incan culture as we visit various Inca ruins and holy sites. Students will also have the opportunity to investigate the cultural diversity of this country by exploring the Andes, Machu Picchu and verious religious and archiological sites with a group of locals. | London Theatre | Explore the exciting world of theatre and performance in London! By experiencing ten productions along with trips to cultural sites throughout the city, students will learn both about the London theatre & performance ecosystem and how to apply analytic techniques to make meaning of live performance and its impacts. Through workshops, lectures, and excursions, students will also gain an understanding of how London theatre operates as an industry and as an artistic enterprise. | THE 398 (3 credits) |
| Paris: Cultural Capital (Honors Preferred Program) | Make the Louvre your classroom; learn about the political philosophies that sparked the French Revolution at Versailles; and discover Hemingway’s Moveable Feast in the spaces that inspired authors of the Lost Generation. This three-week credit workshop focuses on Paris as a capital of transnational cultural and artistic production. Students study masterpieces of French and American literature and culture, from Medieval fables to experimental avant-gardes like Surrealism, to Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s site-specific performance at the Louvre. Through a combination of classroom work, small group collaborative projects, and experiential learning on location, history and art come alive with experiences inside and outside of the classroom. Readings and discussions provide contexts for understanding significant cultural events and artistic movements, such as what led authors and artists like Sartre, Monet, and Zola to become politically engaged, or how Gertrude Stein's modernist style inspired Picasso's painting. Our program facilitates understanding of the past and the present through sustained opportunities for reflecting upon intercultural contexts as you live and learn in the City of Light. January is a wonderful time to study in Paris when museums aren't crowded and we have the Orsay and Versailles practically to ourselves. | Pura Vida: Education, Community, and Innovation | Immersing students in a different culture than their own has deep potential to be a transformative experience, particularly when the focus is on field experiences and the intersectionality of families, communities, education, and innovation. | Sport, Management and Culture in the Global Marketplace | The Sport, Management, and Culture in the Global Marketplace study abroad program is designed for students who are interested in exploring relationship between sport, culture, and the contemporary global economy through an experiential learning environment.
