Brief description of project: This project proposes a relatively inexpensive answer to the need of scanning oversized documents in Amos Music Library. Pay for Print MFDs and ordinary desktop scanners are unable to meet the need. The placement of an overhead scanner (FUJITSU Image Scanner ScanSnap SV600) attached to an iMac computer is the reasonable answer to this issue.

Does this project focus on graduate student education or graduate student life?: No

Describe the problem you are attempting to solve and your approach for solving that problem.: Amos Music Library serves music faculty and students, as well as nearby Creative Arts majors and residence halls on Western and South quads. Currently the Library does not possess overhead scanning technology. Traditional scanning / copying often do not serve our purposes, as music scores are generally much than standard books or Letter size paper; in addition, art students need to image canvases and folio texts too large for a standard flatbed scanner. Unlike some other models, this scanner is compact and does not require any valuable library real estate. Other library locations provide a similar service via KIC machines, which can cost $20,000 each, plus annual maintenance fees; we propose using much more affordable technology to accomplish the same tasks. A dedicated iMac computer to connect to the scanner and run the ScanSnap Manager software is required.

The criteria state that technology fee projects should benefit students in innovative and/or significant ways. How would you describe the innovation and/or significance of your project?: This scanner offers a number of advanced features: book curve image-flattening, auto page-turn detection, finger erasing, scan to Microsoft Office document formats, and scan to cloud storage such as Google Drive and Dropbox. Users can also scan up to 10 documents (such as multiple photographs or newspaper clippings) at one time.

How will you assess the project?: Assessment will be based on statistics provided by the scanning software as well as observation by Library staff.

Have you applied for and/or received Tech Fee awards in past years?: Yes

If funded, what results did you achieve?: Inmod Stereo Alpha Egg Chair Zoom Q4 Video Cameras These have both been successful projects that have been well received by the students.

Did you submit a final report?: Yes

What happens to the project in year two and beyond? Will there be any ongoing costs such as software or hardware maintenance, supplies, staffing, etc.? How will these be funded?: Any maintenance costs and support will be provided by the Library Systems Department.
