Miami University’s new Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence has been officially approved by the Ohio Department of Higher Education.

The program was created to equip students with in-demand skills and prepare them for careers in a variety of fields, including software development, data analysis, education technology, cybersecurity, healthcare, financial, and more.

"The official approval of the Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence marks a landmark achievement for Miami University and our commitment to innovation and workforce development,” said Beena Sukumaran, the Dinesh and ILA Paliwal Dean of the College of Engineering and Computing. “This program is about strategically preparing a new generation of leaders to responsibly harness the transformative power of AI across every sector, ensuring our graduates are immediately valuable in the rapidly evolving global economy. This interdisciplinary approach is exactly how a modern university responds to a world being reshaped by technology."

Students will choose from an application area – examples include statistics, education, and the sciences – which will allow them to tailor their studies to apply AI techniques within their specific interests.

“Through experiential learning, hands-on projects, interdisciplinary coursework, and a strong emphasis on ethical and responsible AI, students will gain both practical experience and a broad understanding of AI’s societal impact,” said Liran Ma, chair of the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, which is home to the program.

The program will also offer opportunities for research and preparation for advanced study that will help position graduates for success.

Ma said the AI degree was driven by the rapid growth and transformative impact of AI across society, noting a demand for graduates with specialized AI skills at both regional and national levels.

“At the same time, students are increasingly interested in learning how AI works and how it can be applied responsibly in real-world settings,” Ma said. “This program was developed to meet that demand, align with Miami University’s strategic goals in innovation and workforce development, and offer students an interdisciplinary, hands-on educational experience that prepares them for success in a wide range of AI-related careers.”

Early stages of the program will see an enrollment target of 20 students per year, which will allow the focus to be on delivering a high-quality educational experience while at the same time build a strong foundation to support future growth.

The new degree is part of a growing global interest in AI.

“Our program at Miami University is part of this broader movement to prepare students for the evolving demands of the AI-driven economy, with a unique focus on interdisciplinary applications and responsible AI development,” Ma said.
Established in 1809, Miami University is located in Oxford, Ohio, with regional campuses in Hamilton and Middletown, a learning center in West Chester, and a European study center in Luxembourg.
