Forum to discuss revisions to the Global Miami Plan

A universitywide forum will be held 4-5:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 1 Upham Hall, for the purpose of receiving feedback on proposed revisions to the Global Miami Plan prior to presenting a proposal for University Senate action during the spring semester.

The proposal and a comparison of the existing Global Miami Plan and the New Model may be viewed on the Liberal Education website. The draft of this proposal represents the most recent step in a multi-stage and inclusive process of redesigning Miami’s liberal education program.

During the 2012-2013 academic year, a team of faculty, staff, and students (the Miami Plan Redesign Task Force) studied exemplary models of, and the professional literature relating to, liberal education and conducted surveys to develop four working models for a new liberal education program. Task force members shared the models with the Miami University community, sought feedback, and created a draft of a single model that responded to the feedback gained.

On June 18-19, 2013, a larger group of faculty, staff and administrators gathered for a two-day retreat to revise the single model further. This group included members of the original task force as well as members of the current Liberal Education Council and one representative from the each of deans’ offices.

Throughout fall 2013, LEC organized forums and online surveys to gather feedback on the draft constructed by the summer retreat’s participants. Based on the feedback provided by staff, students, administrators and faculty, LEC has revised the proposal and on March 4, will seek additional feedback before presenting a proposal before University Senate.
