University Senate action April 28

The 2014-2015 University Senate met Monday, April 28, to elect two faculty members to next year's Executive Committee of University Senate: Terri Barr (marketing), chair-elect, and Susan Brehm (speech, pathology and audiology) at-large member. Bryan Marshall (political science) will serve as 2014-2015 Executive Committee chair.

At the April 28, 2013-2014 University Senate meeting, University Senate heard reports from: Peter Natale, vice president for information technology services, and Todd Bailey, process coordinator, global studies unit.

On the consent calendar, Senate received the curriculum report dated April 23, 2014, minutes of Senate committees and codifications to the Bylaws of University Senate.

With the approval of the April 21, 2014, Senate minutes, and the April 28, 2014, abbreviated minutes, Senate endorsed by voice votes Senate resolutions: SR 14-21, SR 14-22, SR 14-23, SR 14-24, SR 14-25, SR 14-26.

SR 14-21

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate adopts revisions, as amended, to the Global Miami Plan as set forth in the attached document;

FURTHERMORE BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate adopts proposed revisions to the Bylaws of University Senate, Section 6.B.15, Liberal Education Council.

SR 14-22

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate adopts the Promotion and Tenure Guidelines for Dossier Preparation 2014‑2015, the content of which remains unchanged from the academic year 2013‑2014.

SR 14-23

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate adopts revisions as amended to the Miami University Policy and Information Manual,Sections 7.1.E, 7.11.C thru 7.11.F;

FURTHERMORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate adopts Dossier and Evaluation Guidelines for Lecturers, Clinical, and Professionally Licensed Faculty and Recommended Steps for the Success of Lecturers, Clinical and Professionally Licensed Faculty.

SR 14-24

BE IT HEREBY noted that the Executive Committee in the charge to the Governance Committee did not direct the Committee to consult with Senate committees when reviewing the issue of cross departmental and program representation on University Senate committees and thereby the committees impacted by these changes did not have an opportunity to provide suggestions about how this restructuring could be accomplished;

FURTHERMORE BE IT HEREBY noted that on March 17, 2014, University Senate adopted SR 14‑15;

THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that the enactment of SR 14-15 be held in abeyance pending consultation with, and common understanding with, the Council for Undergraduate Curriculum, the Faculty Research Committee, and the Undergraduate Research Committee regarding the impact that SR 14-15 may have on the implementation of the Council’s and Committees’ functions;

FURTHERMORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that the Executive Committee of University Senate deliver a charge to the Governance Committee to consult with Council for Undergraduate Curriculum, the Faculty Research Committee, and the Undergraduate Research Committee during the 2014-2015 academic year regarding the impact that SR 14-15 may have on the implementation of the Council’s and Committees’ functions and to make recommendations (including the options to endorse, revise, or retract) to the Executive Committee on or before February 5, 2015 regarding enacting SR 14-15.

SR 14-25

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate endorse the co-major – critical & classical languages & cultures.

SR 14-26

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate  endorse proposed revisions to the Student Handbook, Chapter 5, Academic Integrity.

SR 14-27

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate confirm the 2014-2015 appointments to open seats of the standing and advisory committees of University Senate; and

BE IT FURTHERMORE RESOLVED that Senate authorize Senate Executive Committee to confirm remaining the 2014-2015 appointments to the standing and advisory committees of University Senate.

Twenty-five members of Faculty Assembly can challenge the resolutions by filing a petition with the Office of the University Secretary during the ten class days after publication in the e-Report.
