The Miami University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ricardo Averbach, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in Hall Auditorium.

The free concert is in honor of the 13th annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days.

It also honors the 50th anniversary of the events of Freedom Summer. Miami is marking the anniversary of local Freedom Summer history with a national conference, exhibitions, lectures and other events in October.

The concert program will feature "Symphony No. 2" by Jean Sibelius and "Pines of Rome" by Ottorino Respighi.

The year 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sibelius, the Finnish composer of the late Romantic period whose music played an important role in the formation of the Finnish national identity.

His music, and in particular his Second Symphony, is part of a collection of scores associated with Finnish struggles for political freedom from the Russian Empire. In this sense the orchestra pays a symphonic homage to Freedom Summer,  Averbach said.

The concert reaffirms a commitment to tolerance and humanity inspired by the events of the summer of 1964.

fsbannerDaniel Pearl World Music Days harnesses the power of music to reaffirm a commitment to fellowship and unity. The event, which embodies the theme "Harmony for Humanity," was created as a response to Pearl's 2002 kidnapping and murder at the hands of extremists in Karachi, Pakistan.

Since 2002, Daniel Pearl World Music Days has encompassed more than 12,000 performances in 132 countries, featuring Elton John, Herbie Hancock, Peter Gabriel, Kool and the Gang and many others.
