So much to do April 18: Oxford Kinetics festival workshops (flying trapeze!); EarthFest; Next Kinetic Picture Show; and more
The Oxford Kinetics Festival is a two-day event this year with workshops, a "kinetic picture show" and a concert uptown Saturday, April 18. Activities for all ages are offered morning, noon and night. Here is a sampling:
Morning
EarthFest: Oxford's Community Earth Day Celebration
10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Uptown Parks
Free festival featuring games, interactive booths and workshops, live music and a bicycle giveaway for kids.
Participating groups include the Oxford Kinetics Festival, Songbird Environmental, Butler Soil and Water Conservation District, ODNR, Miami Eco Reps, MetroParks of Butler County, MOON CO-OP, Green Oxford and many more. Organized by Miami's Institute for the Environment and Sustainability.
Noon
Oxford Kinetics Festival: "Flight of the Flyer" Workshops
Noon-5 p.m. at Millett Hall
Cincinnati Circus Flying Trapeze workshop. Sign up here.
Juggling and tightrope walking instruction is included.
Two time slots available for ages 9-17 and two time slots for ages 18 and older. Participants will be able to show off what they have learned for the community on the following day at the festival ($25 fee).
Everyone who experiences flying trapeze will be on safety lines and over a net.
Blacksmithing workshop. Sign up here.
For participants 16 years old and older.
Designed to introduce some basic skills and techniques important for blacksmithing. This 5-hour long workshop will focus on:
- (gas) cutting and grinding
- basic arc welding
- basic smithing (or smithing from where the experience allows)
MAKETANK and the Oxford Kinetics Festival are hosting the workshop led by blacksmith Dan Mackessy of Mackessy Metalworks LLC, Sharon, Wisc., and metalsmith Kristi Kloss from Ksquaredmetals, Columbus.
The Build Your Own Skateboard workshop is filled.
Night
The Next Kinetic Picture Show – a Cinematic Kick-Off for the Oxford Kinetics Festival
8-10 p.m. Uptown Oxford, High Street - Films
Stroll along High Street and watch a variety of short films on all things kinetic. Films will be projected onto storefront windows (including Lane & Kate; Bluetique; Seaview Outfitters and the former Morning Sun Café).
8-10 p.m. Uptown Parks - Concert
Live music with the band Chris Dance and the Holy Echo (world and roots music).
The next day
Show off your trapeze or blacksmithing skills at the Oxford Kinetics Festival, "Flight of the Flyer," noon-5 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at Millett Hall.
