Confucius Institute needs rowers for Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon boatMiami University’s Confucius Institute is looking for anyone aged 12-80 years old who are willing to be on a team of rowers for the first Hamilton Dragon Boat Festival Saturday, Aug. 20, on the Great Miami River.

The institute is sponsoring a boat and needs 25 rowers. The team will compete against 48 other teams, and there is no entry fee. Racing times will be set in July and will vary throughout the day from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

The festival, a family-oriented event that aims to promote cultural diversity and mutual understanding, is a fundraiser for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

No specific skills are required to participate and rowers will have one practice session before the actual race. Each race lasts approximately 2-3 minutes.

Dragon boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition involving teams racing in 40-foot canoe-like boats. Other activities that day include culture booths and performances at the RiversEdge Amphitheater.
