"Check Your Bl!nd Spots" Tour supports diversity and inclusion

Miami University will host the “Check Your Bl!nd Spots” campus tour from noon-4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, on Maple Street south of Shriver Center.

Students who enter the “Check Your Bl!nd Spots” tour bus will be exposed to possible unconscious bias through a series of quizzes and videos and be empowered to understand the role they can play in promoting diversity and inclusion. Students can share their quiz results on social media to encourage others to participate.

Extensive research shows the unconscious portion of the mind makes the majority of the decisions, creating blind spots — unconscious biases — that can narrow vision and potentially influence behaviors.

The “Check Your Bl!nd Spots” tour reinforces Miami University President Greg Crawford’s pledge to the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion. The pledge commits Miami to a workplace where diverse perspectives and experiences are welcomed and respected. More than 270 CEOs and presidents – including only a handful of university presidents – have signed the pledge.

CEOs and presidents commit to:

  1. Continue to cultivate workplaces where employees feel encouraged to engage in complex, and sometimes difficult, conversations about diversity and inclusion.
  2. Implement and expand unconscious bias education.
  3. Share best known — and unsuccessful — actions.

Miami’s office of diversity affairs is working in conjunction with the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion to organize the event. The CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion is the largest CEO-driven business commitment to advancement and inclusion within the workplace.
