Institute for Food accepting new subscribers for 2018 fall CSA

if-csa-fall-workSign up now for Miami’s Institute for Food fall 2018 Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Applications are accepted through Aug. 17.

Applications for the summer CSA will be accepted through May 18.

Last year the institute piloted its first CSA program. Each week, during the summer and fall months, subscribers took home a box or bag packed full of fresh, seasonal vegetables grown on the Institute for Food farm.

This year box pickup will be on Thursdays from 4-6 p.m. at the Cook Field parking lot pavilion.

CSA summer and fall dates are:

  • Summer 2018 CSA (14 weeks) May 24 through Aug. 23.
  • Fall 2018 CSA (14 weeks) Aug. 30 through Nov. 29.
  • Combined Summer & Fall CSA (28 weeks) May 17 through Nov. 29.

Students enrolled in IES 278 and WST 341 assisted farm staff in tending, harvesting, washing, packing and delivering produce for CSA summer (above) and fall (below) subscribers.

 Two box sizes are offered:

  • A small box for one to two people includes six items per week with the opportunity to self-select an additional one to two items during the weekly pickup.  Cost for each 14-week CSA: $220; for the combined summer/fall CSA: $400.
  •  A large box for a family of four includes 10 items per week with the opportunity to self-select an additional two to four items during the weekly pickup. Cost for each 14-week CSA: $385; for the combined summer/fall CSA: $700.

Boxes will be filled each week with sustainably grown staple crops such as lettuce, onions, potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and broccoli. Self-selection options will focus on seasonally available specialty crops such as bok choy, Chinese cabbage, kohlrabi, hot peppers and eggplant. 

 After the maximum number of subscribers sign up, names will be added to a waiting list.
