By Becky Stephenson, personnel associate, human resources

Jas Minhas is the first point of contact in Miami’s human resources department. The personnel technician manages the front desk, the phone line (9-3131) and takes care of visitors to 15 Roudebush Hall. Here’s some things I learned about Miami’s “face of HR.”

Q: Tell us about yourself, and why you choose to work in human resources?

A: I'm an alumna of Miami University and graduated with a bachelor’s of science in international studies. I was born in India and moved here my freshmen year in high school at Talawanda. Both of my parents have worked for the university.  My mother still works on campus. I have two siblings and they're both students at Miami.  My future goals include working toward a master’s degree in human resources.  I choose to work in human resources because it affects every aspect of an organization both on the local and global levels.

Q: What do you like most about working in HR at Miami?

A: I get a lot of satisfaction helping someone, solving problems and seeing the results.  I've learned a lot of new things working in HR. Every day is an opportunity to make a difference.

Q: What are some things you like to do outside of work?

A: Outside of work, I like to travel, try new things and learn about other cultures. I'm also part of an Indian organization where I teach young children about Indian culture.

Q: You just completed your first Red Brick 5K Run, congratulations! What was it like to train for a 5K?

A: During the training I met a lot of other new and former Miami employees.  I learned a lot from them, and everyone was very supportive. Our wellness staff did a tremendous job coaching all levels of training. All of the coaches provided a lot of helpful information about running and proper form. My coach inspired me to compete in other races.
