Request Permission to Take Excess Hours

Undergraduate students are initially permitted to register for a maximum of 17 credit hours (18 credit hours for students in the College of Engineering and Computing) for the fall and spring semesters. During the open registration period (July for fall semester registration and November for spring semester registration), students may register for up to a maximum of 20 credit hours.

Undergraduate students who need to take more than 20 credit hours during the fall or spring semester, 16 credit hours during the summer term or six credit hours during the winter term must have permission from their Divisional Advising Office. The Divisional Office will notify the Office of the University Registrar to increase the number of hours once open registration begins in a semester/term.

Graduate students must contact the Graduate School to petition to take excess hours. Graduate students may take up to 18 hours during the fall or spring semester, 15 hours during the summer term and six hours during winter term without excess hours permission.
