Following completion of Safe Zone 101, 201, and three Safe Zone electives, participants will be eligible to be part of the Safe Zone Network. These individuals will receive an updated Safe Zone decal, a completion certificate, and can elect to be added to an online directory of Safe Zone Network members. By joining the Safe Zone Network, individuals are agreeing to continually promote safe and affirming spaces for LGBTQ+ people.

Safe Zone Facilitator Program

Safe Zone Program

Safe Zone is a campus-wide program designed to educate students, faculty, staff, and community members on LGBTQ identities and experiences. The goal is to create a community that is inclusive for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. Safe Zone aims to prepare individuals to foster an affirming environment in which all people are free to thrive personally, academically, and professionally. Safe Zone has been designed as a multipart training, with each part building upon the concepts introduced in the previous section.

Safe Zone 101: LGBTQ+ Active Allyship

Safe Zone 101 is a two hour training that introduces individuals to basic language and concepts, and also starts the conversation on what allyship looks like.

  • Wednesday, Feb. 21 from 2-4 p.m. (Oxford)
  • Tuesday, March 12 from 10 a.m.-Noon (Virtual)
  • Friday, April 12 from 1-3 p.m. (Oxford)

Safe Zone 201: Trans and Nonbinary Allyship

Safe Zone 201 is a two hour training that focuses specifically on trans and nonbinary identities, as well as how to best affirm trans and enby individuals.

  • Friday, March 29 from 1-3 p.m. (Oxford)
  • Wednesday, April 10 from 10 a.m.-Noon (Virtual)

Safe Zone Electives

Safe Zone electives are a series of hour-long trainings focused on specific identities and histories within the broader LGBTQIA+ community.

  • Aerospec Safe Zone: Wednesday, Feb. 21 from 4-6 p.m.
  • Bisexual Identities Safe Zone: Tuesday, Feb. 27 from Noon-2 p.m.
  • Queer! Safe Zone: Friday, March 15 from 1-3 p.m.
  • Evolving Language: Thursday, March 21 from 10 a.m.-Noon
  • Lesbian Visibility Safe Zone: Wednesday, April 24 from 4-6 p.m.
  • Privilege and Microaggressions: Friday, May 3 from 10 a.m.-Noon

Pronoun Training

The pronoun training is a 30 minute training that can be scheduled during faculty, staff, or student org meetings. Learn what pronouns are, why they are important, recent changes in pronoun use, and how your program/group can be affirming to people of all gender identities.
