Scholar Leader Community

What is a Scholar Leader?

As a Scholar Leader, students create community by living in the heart of campus in historical residence halls Stoddard and Elliott. Through programming, biweekly community and cluster meetings, once a semester retreats, and EDL 290W (our educational leadership course), we get to know one another and connect with faculty and staff from around campus.

During the year, students have the opportunity to create lifelong friendships and provide a lasting community impact. Scholar Leaders also conduct a minimum of five community service per semester through fun events hosted by fellow Scholar Leaders or in the greater Oxford community. These hours are not only easy to complete, but are full of good memories and positively shape the Miami community and beyond!

In addition, Scholar Leaders gain access to resources and opportunities on campus and in the town of Oxford. As a Scholar Leader, you will have the ability to make the program your own through small group work in your clusters: small groups that every Scholar Leader is in to do programming alongside your community members!

How to become a Scholar Leader

We’re so happy to see your interest in joining the Scholar Leader Living Learning Community (LLC)! Being a Scholar Leader is an incredible way to get involved in community, leadership, service, and equity work on Miami’s campus and in the local community.

The application for the Scholar Leader LLC for the 2024-2025 academic year opens on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2023 and will be open through Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024. Below is the link to the application.

Apply to be a Scholar Leader

Within the application, you will have the opportunity to provide basic biographical information, a copy of your resume, and tell us more about yourself and your interest in Scholar Leaders through a series of short essay prompts. These prompts are meant to guide you as you reflect on your experiences at Miami thus far and allow us to learn more about you and your candidacy for Scholar Leaders. You will be sent a copy of your application upon successful submission.

Interview Process

After submitting your application, you will receive communication on whether or not you will be offered an interview.

Interviews will occur in person on March 4 and 5, 2024 and will be scheduled for a one hour long block. During this time, staff and students will ask you questions as well as provide you space to do the same. Should you need to request a remote interview, you will be able to schedule with Scholar Leader staff as needed. Interviews will be conducted individually in a formal session by members of the Office of Residence Life and Wilks Professional Staff teams alongside a current Scholar Leader.

Dress as you feel most comfortable and confident!

If you are studying abroad or have another outstanding circumstance while interviews are being conducted, you should still apply. You may be contacted via email to set up a phone or video interview while you are away. Preference is given to applicants who can participate the entire 2024-2025 academic year.

Throughout the application process, the Office of Residence Life will be in contact with you via your university email account. It is vital that you check your email frequently and reply to messages you receive regarding the Scholar Leader selection process. Should you have any questions, please contact Noah Montague at Montagnw@MiamiOH.edu or Jillian Gruber at Gruberj5@MiamiOH.edu or by calling 513-529-2016.
