Floral Color Change in the Highland Papaya

Mentor: Richard Moore, Ph.D.

The objectives of this study are: To characterize the period of color change within the context of sexual dimorphism, To test and compare the fertility of male and female flowers at each color phase. We hypothesize that floral color change in Vasconcellea parviflora is indicative of stigma receptivity and pollen viability. We predict that both male and female flowers in the early-stage white phase will have higher fertility than those in the later pink stage.
