What makes Miami Music unique?

We’re a “right-sized” department: big enough for world-class opportunities, but small enough that everyone knows your name.

Performance from Day One

From your very first semester, you’ll be on stage—whether it’s chamber music, chorus, opera, jazz, our bands, or orchestra. Every ensemble is open to every student, not just majors. And with renowned ensembles—including four American Prize winners—you’ll be part of something nationally recognized.

Learn from an Extraordinary Faculty

Our faculty are more than teachers—they’re internationally acclaimed performers, conductors, scholars, and composers. They bring their artistry straight into the classroom, offering lifelong mentorship and the inside track on what it takes to thrive in today’s music world.

All-Steinway

As an All-Steinway School, Miami provides students with the finest pianos, ensuring they practice and perform at the highest level.

World-Class Guests on Campus

We bring the music world to you. One week you might be in a masterclass with the a famous string quartet, the next working with a living composer or performing alongside a visiting ensemble.

Explore the World with Us

Want to study music in Italy, Austria, Luxembourg, or Ireland? You’ll go with Miami faculty leading the way, turning study abroad into an extension of your musical training.

Want to be a teacher?

Our music education program is among the best in the country. You’ll start teaching in schools your very first year, and by graduation, you’ll be in high demand—with a near-perfect job placement rate.

Flexibility for Your Future

Dream big: double major, add a co-major like Arts Administration, or pair music with business, science, or another passion.

Arts Day

The College of Creative Arts hosts an annual recruitment event, Arts Day, for high-school students and families. Students and faculty from the Department of Music will be available for visitors to answer questions, tour the facilities, and learn about our programs and opportunities in the department.

Music Ensembles

Ensembles are the public face of Miami's Department of Music. In a given semester more than 10% of all Miami students participate in a music ensemble or performing group. Student ensembles frequently travel and have been received warmly from the halls of Europe to Carnegie Hall.

Performance Calendar

Performances produced by the Department of Music are free and open to the public and include ensembles and recitals by students, studios, and visiting artists. Occurring frequently, these performances showcase the enormous talent of our students at every level and serve as a constant source of inspiration for their patrons.

Department of Music

The Miami University Department of Music encourages its students to develop their relationship to the discipline of music as they explore the world through the lens of a superb liberal arts education.
