Centers

The Department of Teacher Education administers two centers:

The Discovery Center for Evaluation, Research, & Professional Learning

The Discovery Center for Evaluation, Research, & Professional Learning serves as Ohio’s only comprehensive center for research, evaluation, and professional learning in science, mathematics, technology, computer science, and engineering education, dedicated to collaboration, advocacy, and strategic innovation. The Center was established in 2015 through a merger of The Discovery Center and Ohio’s Evaluation & Assessment Center, to build upon a 24-year history of support for improving mathematics and science teaching and learning.

As part of the Center’s mission to provide comprehensive, high-quality services to improve teaching and learning and promote equity in opportunity, access, and outcomes for all learners, Discovery Center staff are dedicated to sharing their rich knowledge of research, evaluation, assessment, and professional development with others.

Dr. Sarah B. Woodruff, is the Center Director. To learn more about the Discovery Center’s work, and the services they provide, visit www.MiamiOH.edu/discoverycenter.

The Heckert Center for Children's Reading and Writing

The Heckert Center was established in 1983 to establish models of literacy excellence and to engage in the study and improvement of children’s reading and writing. Richard and Barbara Heckert, Oxford natives and Miami graduates, endowed the center to honor Richard’s father, John W. Heckert, a Miami professor of education from 1910-1942 and first director of the McGuffey Laboratory School.

Other goals of the Heckert Center are to serve as an information exchange center for the development and dissemination of research in children’s reading and writing.

Dr. Tom Romano is director of The Heckert Center for Children's Reading and Writing.
