Brief description of project: Provide iPad Pro with Apple pencil to streamline access to digital resources in the Wertz Art/Architecture Library and allow students to engage with these resources in a manner that would enhance effectiveness of these resources.

Does this project focus on graduate student education or graduate student life?: Yes

If yes, please explain: The Master Design and Architecture programs thrive on the integration of work with emerging technologies. The Apple iPad Pro and Apple Pencil will allow us to provide access to such technology, by way of 3D architectural design programs, illustration software and mock-up software, and software and features that would aid in presenting their ideas, plans, and designs to others. This technology would aid graduate students in thesis work and provide access to powerful, professional, and portable design solutions.

Describe the problem you are attempting to solve and your approach for solving that problem.: Art and Architecture digital resources, such as ebooks and high-resolution images databases, benefit from a powerful, portable display format, maximizing engagement. With an iPad Pro would streamline, increase and enhance student access to those resources. The Art and Architecture Library sees a high demand for portable design and presentation solutions. With an iPad Pro, patrons could use the mobile CAD App for mock-ups and quick notes while in the classroom or on site, or the Procreate App to quickly illustrate diagrams, mock-ups, or make quick edits to images and photos. These illustration programs are further enhanced by the Apple Pencil, allowing the student to create directly into a digital environment.

The criteria state that technology fee projects should benefit students in innovative and/or significant ways. How would you describe the innovation and/or significance of your project?: Due to their size and versatility Apple iPads are one of the most frequent items circulated in the library system. The iPad Pro has the power and usability of a pen tablet and desktop computer combined in a portable format. Coupled with the Apple Pencil, students and patrons can create in a natural way directly into a digital environment, allowing them to quickly share their creations with others, create multiple backups, and make quick edits or changes. Using a portable touch based interface, students can also better and more naturally engage with digital books and image databases, without being tethered to a computer screen.

How will you assess the project?: Assessments will be measured by usage statistics, tracking the number of times the items are checked out through our circulation module - Sierra. In addition there will be staff interaction with students to optimize their use.

Have you applied for and/or received Tech Fee awards in past years?: Yes

If funded, what results did you achieve?: Assessments will be measured by usage statistics, tracking the number of times the items are checked out through our circulation module - Sierra. In addition there will be staff interaction with students to optimize their use.In 2015 and 2016, the Wertz Art and Architecture Library piloted the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 and 4 as part of a Tech Fee award. In 2014 the Wertz Art and Architecture Library piloted the Wacom Cintiq 21HD Drawing Tablets. These projects have met with success.

Did you submit a final report?: Yes

What happens to the project in year two and beyond? Will there be any ongoing costs such as software or hardware maintenance, supplies, staffing, etc.? How will these be funded?: The Library Systems Department within the library will assume responsibility for maintaining and supporting the iPads and the requested applications.
