Welcome to Literary London!

Live and learn in London! Walk in Shakespeare’s footsteps. See great plays at the Globe Theatre. Study avant-garde art at the Tate Modern. Read in the British Library or Hyde Park. Tour the East End’s rich cultural heritage! We have gained an excellent reputation for offering a comprehensive, genuinely enriching academic and cultural experience in London and Stratford since 2006.

Our students take new classes that blend literary and cultural study together carefully over 6 weeks, usually mid-May to end-June. We explore different literary themes special to London each year, and take full advantage of an exciting mix of exhibitions, heritage sites, museums, theater performances, author readings, talks, and tours.

You might read Monica Ali’s Brick Lane, take a walking tour of London’s diverse neighborhoods, sample local curry, and then go see a cutting-edge Shakespeare play performed by a Pakistani theater company at the Globe. Learn about the importance of the Roman for the art, culture, and literature of the Tudor era. Read Jane Austen’s novels and explore Georgian culture and society on site in Bath. Or hear contemporary authors discuss how the streets of London have shaped the setting of their novels and short stories.

Join us for an exciting London cultural immersion that will be one of the highlights of your college learning experience—we look forward to having you on board in the coming year!

Program Overview

  • Earn 7 Miami University credits in 6 weeks. Courses satisfy a range of Miami Plan, English credits, and other requirements, including the Humanities Global Perspectives requirement.
  • Take your choice of a selection of literature/creative writing classes taught only by Miami University professors. This is what we do!
  • Students from all majors and other universities welcome!
  • We enroll about 20 students each year, keeping the group an ideal size for conversation and engagement.
  • Literary London is an official Miami workshop program housed in the English Department.

We offer a unique range of interesting Literature, Creative Writing, and other English courses. Every year, Shakespeare On-Stage, On-Site takes you to many exciting stage productions in London and Stratford. Because we take advantage of what’s new and happening in exciting and culturally diverse London, courses are designed by Miami faculty especially to be taught on-site. No class is ever the same!

Classes meet in modern facilities located in Kensington at AIFS' new central location, just a few steps from the V&A Museum and other cultural gems in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea. All classes meet Tuesday through Thursday with weekends free. We typically attend theater performances one evening a week. Wednesdays are usually reserved for day- and field-trips and site work.

Student Alumni and Faculty

We love our many Lit London alumni! We hold alumni and welcoming events on campus throughout the year, including London Quiz/Trivia Nights, the Annual Alumni Spring Tea for alumni and new enrollees, and other new events.

Literary London is always developing new ways to stay connected, whether you’re a new student looking to contact alumni through our LL London Facebook group or @litlondon_mu,  or an alum who wants to rejoin friends you made in London! Stay posted here for current events
