Predator & Prey: Evolutionary Dynamics of Bats and Moths

bats and butterflies

Advanced Inquiry Program student Niki Desautels created this infographic as part of her Issues in Evolution course to summarize the way that bats have influenced moth evolution over millions of years, and vice versa. Desautels examined many of the back and forth coevolution steps caused by the predator prey dynamic between moths and bats, since bats first evolved (thanks in part to moths!) 65-90 million years ago.

Did you know without plentiful nocturnal moths to eat, the bats common ancestor may have never evolved the ability to fly? Did you know that bats are the reason many moths have ears? Did you know that Tiger moths can jam bat sonar?
