Determining the role of films for conservation

Maegan Leavendusky

Global Field Program (GFP) graduate Maegan Leavendusky '24 of Mayetta, Kansas, traveled to Cameroon, West Africa, where she worked on The Great Ape Conservation Film Project (GACFP), a partnership between GLOBIO, a media conservation organization, and Ape Action Africa, a local non-governmental organization. Through this partnership, Leavendusky coauthored an article that appears in the journal of African Primates. "The Great Ape Conservation Film Project: Using Film to Create Lasting Conservation Impacts for Great Apes and Communities" sets out to determine the role films could play and establish factors determining their successful creation, development, and distribution. Leavendusky, who is a Global Field Program student in Miami's Biology Department, will earn a Master of Arts next month. She holds bachelor degrees in nursing and anthropology and works as the Outreach Education Coordinator for GLOBIO. Leavendusky is also GACFP's Project Coordinator and focused her graduate work on creating connections and lasting impacts for primate conservation.
