BME/CSE Co-op
The College of Engineering and Computing is excited to announce the launch of a new, selective co-op program for students in the Paper, Chemical, and Biomedical Engineering program and the Computer Science and Software Engineering program. This is one way that our engineering students can satisfy the Experiential Learning requirement of the Miami Plan. Cooperative Education provides students majoring in these programs the opportunity to gain practical work experience in their field of study through working in industry
The importance of cooperative education cannot be overemphasized. Data clearly shows that co-op experiences help students achieve a higher starting salary upon graduation, a greater number of job offers following graduation, and a higher degree of technical proficiency in their field. Actual working experience in an industrial or a professional setting prior to graduation helps accomplish the following:
- Students who complete a multi-term co-op have higher starting salaries on average than those who do not
- Provides "real" world practical experience
- Students gain valuable skills appreciated in the workplace
- Students can assess the relevance of a career in chosen discipline to the their long-term goals
Admission Requirements
This new program will begin recruiting students and accepting applications in the Spring of 2025, and will launch in the Fall of 2025. G.P.A. and application responses will play a factor in whether or not students are accepted into the co-op program for this first cohort. Accepted students will be required to complete UNV111, a 0.5 credit course to be completed in the Fall, which will prepare them for a successful experience in applying, interviewing, and effectively working in their co-op experience. During each co-op semester, students will be required to register for a corresponding course (CEC340C/440C) in order to maintain student status.
How to Apply
To apply for this co-op program, you will need to attend the co-op kickoff meeting. The meeting will be held in Benton 102 lobby, Thursday, March 6 from 3:00-5:00 p.m..

Course Registration
It is essential that you register for a Professional Practice course CEC340C when away on co-op assignment. The registration for these courses will be through Handshake. The course records your co-op experience on your transcript as well as retains your “enrolled status” for spring and fall. This also enables the Registrar’s Office to forward upcoming registration information to you while you are on assignment.
CEC340C - A single work period of engineering-related, full-time employment of at least one semester or one summer (16-20 weeks) or approved part-time work of at least 20 hours per week.
CEC440C - A second work period of engineering-related full-time employment of at least one semester or one summer (16-20 weeks) or approved part-time work of at least 20 hours per week.
