Protected Classes

The Office of Equity and Equal Opportunity investigates reports of harassment and discrimination based on protected class status. A protected class is a group of people who share common characteristics and are protected from harassment and discrimination.

Miami University's Policy Prohibiting Harassment and Discrimination Classes may in some respects exceed the requirements of applicable law. Classes that are protected under this policy include:

  • Age
  • Color
  • Disability
  • Gender identity or expression
  • Genetic information
  • Military status
  • National origin (ancestry)
  • Pregnancy
  • Race
  • Religion
  • Sex/gender
  • Status as a parent or foster parent
  • Sexual orientation
  • Protected veteran status
