SAHE Frequently Asked Questions
When are applications due?
The preferred deadline is January 3, 2023.
Does SAHE require Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores?
No, the GRE is not required for admission to the Miami University SAHE M.S. program.
Who should my Letters of Recommendation be from?
The SAHE faculty require two professional references and two faculty references. Letters that address both your in-class and out-of-class experiences assist faculty in assessing your readiness to pursue a graduate degree. If submitting two professional references and two faculty references is a hardship, please submit your letters of reference and include a brief statement that explains your unique circumstances warranting an exception from this requirement. We do not accept character references. Your letters of reference must address your ability to succeed in the program.
What is the difference between a M.S. assistantship and a practicum?
Miami University awards most SAHE students an assistantship during the two years of graduate study. These 20-hour-per-week assistantships are available in numerous university offices, programs, and departments. All assistantships include a tuition waiver as well as a stipend during the academic year. Assistantship tuition waivers and graduate assistantship stipends assist students to meet most of their financial obligations. Numerous university offices offer supervised practice experiences to SAHE students (who receive academic credit). SAHE M.S. students complete a minimum of two supervised practice experiences in addition to their assistantship during their two-year graduate program.
Is the program open to international students?
Yes! SAHE welcomes students from around the world.
As an international student, how do I know if the SAHE program is the right fit for my educational interests?
We welcome international applicants to our SAHE Master’s Program. We would like to suggest you review our Student Life page and the NASPA and ACPA websites before submitting your application. Miami University’s Student Life division will allow you an opportunity to understand the key areas and types of roles (among many others) that our program helps prepare graduates to fill. Matriculated students will have an experiential component and/or an assistantship as fundamental to the SAHE program to prepare them for these roles. The NASPA and ACPA websites detail the philosophy and principles underlying student affairs in higher education in the United States. Reviewing these websites will help you determine if the SAHE program is consistent with your prior experiences and professional goals.
Can you tell me more about assistantships?
Assistantships are not mandatory for SAHE students, however many elect to have GA positions as they offer a modest living stipend and tuition remission. Although the SAHE program does not guarantee assistantships, all current students in the program who want an assistantship have one. More information about assistantships and associateships can be found at the Graduate School.
Will applicants be interviewed before being accepted into the program?
Yes, there will be interviews for selected applicants. Applicants will have the opportunity to meet faculty, current SAHE students, as well as tour Miami's campus.
Can I visit Miami University to learn more about the SAHE program?
