Archives & Artifacts in London This interdisciplinary workshop introduces students to archival and humanities research over Winter Term at the British Library and other London archives, including the London School of Economics and the Wellcome Collection. The British Library is the world's largest and most comprehensive research collection, housing more than 170 million items from every era of written civilization. The scope of the British Library's collection includes everything from ancient artifacts to British colonial records to original recordings of the Beatles, making this workshop appropriate for students doing any sort of archival or humanities-based research. London is also home to several other of the world's biggest archives; students will have the chance to visit at least three. While this workshop is open to all students working on an independent research project, it may be most appealing for students engaged in honors projects, thesis projects, capstone projects, and/or Dean's Scholar Projects, as they will be able to complete significant portions of their research while participating in this workshop. Business & Conversational Spanish in Argentina The Program offers a unique cultural and language immersion experience for Spanish majors and minors over the course of 3 weeks in Argentina. The classroom is extended far beyond the confines of the physical space, as students are culturally integrated, through home-stays, into small-town life in Argentina. Excursions and cultural events enhance student learning by allowing them to take a hands-on approach to their learning, incorporating the knowledge and skills from the class to be applied in "real-world", contextualized applications. Short excursions and travel incorporated into the program provide a "bigger picture" of what Argentine life and culture represent. Leaving the rural towns offers insight into different ways of life, dialects, customs, and Argentinian culture. From Patagonia and the glaciers to the thriving metropolis of Buenos Aires, the perspective students gain from the experiences constructs a more realistic and holistic view of Argentina. Pura Vida: Education, Community, and Innovation in Costa Rica Immersing students in a different culture than their own has deep potential to be a transformative experience, particularly when the focus is on field experiences and the intersectionality of families, communities, education, and innovation. The design of this global education program is to expose students to communities, learn about various schooling practices, see innovation in action, and engage with people from three different geographical Costa Rican areas: San Jose in the Central Valley, Monteverde in the mountains/cloud forest of Puntarenas Province, and Flamingo in the Pacific Ocean/coastal area of Guanacaste Province. Students will have the opportunity to interact with non-profit organizations that are working alongside communities to effect change using asset-based perspectives. Participants will also visit with school directors who are leveraging different progressive education models. The Way is El Camino The Way of St. James is a journey like no other to deepen understandings of Spanish and European cultures (and, by extension, both Western civilization and pilgrimage studies) is something that anyone out of the hundreds of thousands who have done El Camino would be more than likely to corroborate. This course takes place during three weeks of the Winter Term, while hiking along The Way of St. James (Camino Mozárabe and Camino Francés, a UNESCO World Heritage site). Independent of the academic component of the course, each participant may have a different personal approach to The Way. A traveling experience, not only physical but also emotional, The Way of St. James may become a religious pilgrimage, an introspective encounter with oneself, an individual challenge of walking around 12-14 miles daily, or a cultural journey through a different space, and also a different time, as far back as the 11th century.
