Summer English Language Workshop Programs

Prior to the start of the Fall 2019 semester, new and current international graduate students are eligible to enroll in one of two newly offered English language workshop programs. These programs are designed to support students prior to the start of the semester, strengthening their writing and speaking skills (both general and discipline-specific). 

Students who have at least one TOEFL subscore less than 25, or an IELTS subscore below a 7.0, are strongly recommended to participate in these workshop programs. 

  1. The Miami University (MU) Graduate English Workshop 

    The Miami University Graduate English Workshop is a 6-week program that focuses on both discipline-specific and general reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. International students completing this program will develop the cultural competence and the oral and written language skills to better succeed in their graduate program. Students enrolled in this program will automatically be enrolled in the 2-week Graduate Classroom Leadership Program.  
  2. The Graduate Classroom Leadership Program

    The Graduate Classroom Leadership Program is a 2-week program that will provide the skills necessary to succeed in terms of language, culture and pedagogy as graduate assistants and teaching assistants. Students completing this program will be able to develop teaching skills, language skills and cultural awareness to better support their success in graduate teaching assignments.

MU Graduate English Workshop

Areas of Focus:

  • Analyses of language and text structures of discipline-specific articles
  • Summaries, reviews and critiques
  • Pronunciation and presentation skills
  • Clarity of language and speech in an instructional context

Program Dates:

  • July 8 - 19 (online instruction)
    • Focus on scholarly articles, and short writings
  • July 22 (arrive to Miami University)
  • July 23 - August 14 (in-person instruction at Miami University)

Graduate Classroom Leadership Program

 Areas of Focus:

  • Pronunciation and presentation skills
  • Examining American academic classrooms
  • Teaching method analyses
  • Effective classroom management

Program Dates:

  • July 30 (arrive to Miami University)
  • July 31 - August 14 (in-person instruction at Miami University)
