Our Mission

Our mission is to ensure that Miami University supports its students in developing as effective writers in college, fully preparing graduates to excel as clear, concise, and persuasive writers in their careers, communities, and personal lives. To do this, the HCWE strives to:

  • Help faculty provide the most innovative, research-based writing instruction in the country—and to be widely and publicly acknowledged for doing so.
  • Positively and measurably impact writing-related research, practice, and policy at Miami, in Ohio, in the region, and in the nation.

What We Offer

The Howe Writing Across the Curriculum (HWAC) programs offer support in two main ways:

  1. We help teachers draw on their own expertise to help their students learn to write. Learn more about our innovative writing fellows program and pedagogy workshops, as well as our online disciplinary writing guides, and our one-on-one teaching consultations. We also support teachers who want to propose and design new Advanced Writing courses.

  2. We give teachers and researchers the time, space, and resources they need to work on their own writing. Come write with us at our popular writing retreats, join a supportive writing group, or simply drop in to our weekly open writing hours every Friday morning.
