Brief description of project: Intuos Pro provides a powerful interface that students of all disciplines could use to simulate drawing on a pen and paper, and translating it directly into a digital environment that allows easy manipulation and faster workflow. The drawing tablet is compatible with a wide range of software offered by the library, including the Adobe Suite, Google Sketchup, and the Autodesk Suite.

Does this project focus on graduate student education or graduate student life?: Yes

If yes, please explain: The Master Design and Architecture graduate programs continue to move into a more digital workspace. Wacom Intuos Pro pen tablets will provide an opportunity to work and create in a digital environment, using familiar software and technology on a variety of platforms.

Describe the problem you are attempting to solve and your approach for solving that problem.: The Art and Architecture Library sees a high demand for portable design hardware. The current inventory which includes the older Wacom Pen tablet cannot meet that demand. The Intuos Pro would better serve the needs of students of all disciplines seeking powerful, inspiring hardware to use where they are most comfortable and creative.

The criteria state that technology fee projects should benefit students in innovative and/or significant ways. How would you describe the innovation and/or significance of your project?: The Art and Architecture Wacom pen tablet, which is an older generation of the Intuos Pro is one of the most circulated items at the Library. The Intuos Pro would provide a more powerful interface that students of all disciplines could use in the library, or in the studio. The drawing tablet simulates drawing on a pen and paper, and by translating directly into a digital environment allows easy manipulation and faster workflow. The drawing tablet is compatible with a wide range of software offered by the library, including the Adobe Suite, Google Sketchup, and the Autodesk Suite. An iPad pro that has been requested in another Tech Fee proposal can do similar things but the Intuous Pro provides a more sophisticated approach to the problem. This would provide an additional solution with the iPad Pro providing an opportunity to get a beginner's look at the process while the Intuous Pro would be helpful for the more sophisticated user.

How will you assess the project?: Assessments will be measured by usage statistics, tracking the number of times the items are checked out through our circulation module . In addition, interactions between Library staff and users will provide significant input.

Have you applied for and/or received Tech Fee awards in past years?: Yes

If funded, what results did you achieve?: In 2015 and 2016, the Wertz Art and Architecture Library piloted the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 and 4 as part of a Tech Fee award. In 2014 the Wertz Art and Architecture Library piloted the Wacom Cintiq 21HD Drawing Tablets. Results of thes proposals has been extremely positive.

Did you submit a final report?: Yes

What happens to the project in year two and beyond? Will there be any ongoing costs such as software or hardware maintenance, supplies, staffing, etc.? How will these be funded?: The Systems Department within the library will assume responsibility for maintaining and supporting the drawing tablets and the requested applications. Additional costs are not anticipated in the short term.
