On Saturday, Oct. 22, the FBI informed Miami University Police Department that a post was made on YikYak, an anonymous social media channel, threatening harm to Miami parents during family weekend. Federal and local law enforcement, including MUPD, worked together to quickly identify and apprehend the individual, and investigate the incident. No weapons were found, and the individual was charged with, and jailed for, a felony of the third degree for making terroristic threats.
The concerns you raised are shared by the university. Due to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) we are not able to provide further details, including the student’s current whereabouts, but please be assured that the university is using all available resources and processes to ensure the safety of our students and campus community. The Butler County judge’s ruling that the individual be allowed to attend class does not limit the university's ability to take action under its Code of Student Conduct.
