Research Bio
Dr. Giabbanelli joined Miami University in 2019 as associate professor. He was previously a tenure-track assistant professor at Northern Illinois University (for 3 years) and Furman University (1 year), and a researcher at the University of Cambridge (UK).
He obtained his doctorate and masters at Simon Fraser University (Canada), and he received in BSc at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis (France). Dr. Giabbanelli has taught a range of data science courses such as Machine Learning, Network Science, Virtual Worlds, Database, or Simulation. His research focus is to develop and apply data science techniques to problems related to human health, particularly obesity and HIV. His work is often at the intersection of health and computer science as he seeks to create software tools that can then be used by decision-makers and individuals.
The main skills of his research group (www.dachb.com) include simulation models and machine learning. Specifically, Dr. Giabbanelli mentors students on discrete simulation models (e.g., agent-based modeling, cellular automata), network analysis, and machine learning (e.g., classification, performance analysis). Currently, his main projects are (i) using machine learning to accelerate large-scale simulations and (ii) shifting from big to useful data by identifying the minimum parts of a dataset needed to quickly make accurate predictions.
Dr. Giabbanelli serves as program chair for the ACM SIGSIM conference on Principles of Advanced Discrete Simulation (PADS).
He also chairs the track on artificial societies at the Spring Simulation conference. Dr. Giabbanelli is on the editorial board of BMC Medical Informatics & Decision Making as well as Social Network Analysis Mining.
