Research
My research is in experimental ultracold atom physics, specifically on Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of dilute alkali gases. A BEC is an extreme state of matter, wherein all of the atoms occupy the lowest quantum energy state. A BEC is considered to be a macroscopic system (~ 100 microns) but exhibits quantum phenomena. Typical BEC temperatures are in tens of nanokelvins (compare this to the coldest outer space temperature of ~3 K), so these are literally the coolest things in the universe to study.
