… is a tropical forest ecologist with over 25 years of management, research, and training experience in natural resources management with in-depth knowledge of sustainable forests including forestry business certification, tropical forest ecology, biodiversity and climate issues, protected areas management, nature-based tourism, capacity building, and community-related work in international settings. For over 20 years, Dr. Thomas has been committed to civil society activism, having volunteered and is currently supporting several environmental and human rights-related NGOs, and is co-founder of Guyana Citizens Initiative and Citizens Against Rape-Guyana. Raquel is currently Director of Resource Management and Training at the Iwokrama International Centre for Forest Conservation and Development, an organization that manages one of the five protected areas in Guyana. She has also been the Chair of the Protected Areas Commission Board for the past three years.
