Miami Bound: A Day on the Farm

The program will begin at 8:30 AM on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 and conclude at 5:00 pm. Students should plan to arrive on Tuesday, August 20th.

Program Fee: $185.00*

*The program fee covers the costs of early move-in lodging for 2 nights, farm lunch and refreshments, transportation to and from the farm and garden supplies.

About Miami Bound - A Day on the Farm

Interested in local food, sustainability, and getting your hands in the dirt? Join us for a day of planting, tending, harvesting, and tasting on Miami’s Institute for Food Farm.

When you arrive at Miami, our farm will be overflowing with delicious and nutritious tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, summer squash, melons, an array of summer crops; we will be busy harvesting and packing out for our weekly CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) members pick up, and we will be preparing to get cold weather plants seeded and transplanted for the fall season.

If you are interested in farm-to-table food and sustainable farming, if you want to support healthy food and a healthy planet, this is a great way to spend a day helping us on the farm. You will meet fellow foodies, learn a bit about sustainable farming, and enjoy a day outside making things grow.


Students should plan on arriving Tuesday, August 20, 2019. On Wednesday, August 21, we will meet in the lobby of Boyd Hall bright and early to enjoy the cool morning temperatures on the farm. We will spend the day outside, working on the Institute for food farm: planting, tending, harvesting, packing out, and even tasting fresh, sustainably-grown, local food. A picnic lunch is included.


Start: Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at 8:30am—Meet in the lobby of Boyd Hall on Oxford’s Western Campus [551 Western College Dr, Oxford, OH 45056]

End: 5:00pm—Students will be taken back to Oxford campus.

Additional Information

We are happy to welcome Miami Bound students to join us for a day on Miami’s Institute for Food Farm. The Institute for Food (IFMiami) is part of the Institute for the Environment and Sustainability (IES), which serves as an umbrella organization for undergraduate and graduate education and research on the environment and sustainability.

Our 14-acre, sustainable vegetable farm is the heart of the Institute for Food. It serves as a living laboratory where faculty and students from all divisions of the university gain hands-on experience in connection to all aspects of our food system. Our working, intensive vegetable farm supports a 28-week Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program for the Miami community, and it is home to a range of research projects, including a solar-powered water system, a carbon sequestration project, a groundwater field lab, a pollinator prairie, and a nutrition education and food outreach program. The farm also serves as a field base for our co-major in Food Systems & Food Studies, which is designed to complement a primary academic major.

We are hoping you will join us for a day on the farm at the height of summer season to help plant, tend, harvest and learn about the value of seasonal, sustainably-grown, local food.
