We Will Help You Succeed

With the guidance of the College of Arts and Science Academic Advising Office, you will find what you need to know to reach your goals and stay on track as you navigate life at Miami University. Advising is an important component of your academic experience and we recommend that you meet with an advisor at least twice a year.

Our Mission

The College of Arts and Science Academic Advising Office upholds a student-centered approach in which advisors assist students by providing accurate information as well as available tools to guide them through the construction of a framework for a successful college experience.  We view academic advising as a shared action between student and advisor that fosters accountability and independent decision-making.  Advisors will connect students with other campus departments and offices to assist them in navigating resources with the goal of teaching self-advocacy.

Our philosophy of advising is grounded in the following tenets:

  • Engagement - As life-long learners, advisors will introduce students to campus resources, facilitating connections to the full range of available services and activities at Miami.
  • Education - By using teachable moments during the advising appointment, advisors will help students develop into educated decision-makers and autonomous explorers of the academic and personal development opportunities available to them.
  • Encouragement - In a relationship based on honesty, integrity, and compassion, advisors will support, inspire, and challenge students to form their own beliefs and experiences as active participants in their education and development.
  • Empowerment - Through the academic advising process, students will learn to make intentional choices, allowing them to take ownership of their academic, professional, and personal lives.
