Software Engineering Major Requirements 2015-2016

(117 hours + free electives)

English and Advanced Writing (6-7 hours)

  • ENG 109 or ENG 111 Composition
  • ENG 313 Technical Writing

Required Mathematics/Statistics/ Natural Science Courses (30 hours)

Mathematics (12 hours) Take both of the following:

  • MTH 151 Calculus I
  • MTH 231 Elements of Discrete Mathematics
  • MTH 251 Calculus II

Statistics (3 hours) Take one of the following:

  • STA 301 Applied Statistics
  • STA 401 Probability

Natural Science Electives (12-13 hours)

Select one of the following three science sequences:

  • BIO/MBI 115 and 116
  • CHM 141 + 144 and 142 + 145
  • PHY 191 and 192

Take remaining science hours to complete your major science requirement (12 hours of science) and the Miami Plan science requirement (at least 3 hours of Miami Plan Biological Science and at least 3 hours of Miami Plan Physical Science). 

Math/Stat/Science Elective

Software Engineering majors are required to take at least 30 credit hours of mathematics (at or beyond MTH 151), statistics, and natural science courses.

Economics and Communication (6 hours) 

  • ECO 201 Microeconomics, or ECO 202 Macroeconomics
  • STC 135 Public Expression & Critical Inquiry 

Fine Arts, Humanities, & Social Science (3 hours)

  • Global Miami Plan Fine Arts Elective
  • (Humanities and Social Science satisfied by ECO 201 or 202, and CSE 262)

Global Perspectives (6 hours)

Select one of the following two options:

  • 6 hours of Foundation credit from any Miami-approved Study Abroad program, or
  • 6 hours of Global courses specifically designed to have a global perspective

Intercultural Perspectives (3 hours)

  • Global Miami Plan Intercultural Perspectives Elective

Thematic Sequence

The MTH-2 thematic sequence is fulfilled by CSE requirements: MTH 151, MTH 231, STA 301

Global Miami Plan Capstone (3 or more hours) and Experiential Learning (0 or more hours)

Specialization Area (12-18 hours)

In consultation with your faculty advisor, define and complete a sequence of courses in an area of specialization

Free Electives

All students are required to complete at least 128 semester hours of coursework. In addition to courses you take to satisfy the requirements of your major, you will need to take enough free electives to complete the 128-hour requirement. These can come from any courses that Miami offers. No more than 10 hours may come from Kinesiology and Health courses (KNH) numbered 110-170.
