Ceremony Instructions

Assembly

Millett Hall will open at 1 p.m. Candidates should plan to arrive at Millett with cap and gown in hand no later than 2:15 p.m. (The ushers and marshals will notify you when it is time to put on your academic attire.)

When you arrive, look for signs directing you to your divisional lineup areas:

  • Master's, Specialist, and Doctoral Candidates will report to the Graduate School location in the south lobby.
  • Undergraduate Candidates will report to their appropriate School/College table, located in either the east or west concourse area.
  • ROTC Candidates will follow the assembly instructions received by their service unit.

After reporting to your appropriate area, each candidate will be given a name card. It is very important that you pick up your name card so that you can be recognized as you cross the stage during the ceremony. Once you have your name card, please fill in the information that the photography company has asked for. This information will be on the front and back of the name card, so please remember to fill in the information on both sides. After your name card is filled in, faculty marshals will line you up and direct you seating on the arena floor.

Program

The procession will start promptly at 3 p.m. Faculty marshals will lead the processional into the stadium and direct candidates to seating.

Marshals will direct candidates up onto the stage for the conferring of degrees* in the following order:

  • Undergraduate by division (College of Engineering and Computing; College of Creative Arts; Farmer School of Business; College of Education, Health and Society; College of Arts and Science; College of Liberal Arts and Applied Science)
  • Specialist and Master's degrees
  • Doctoral (Doctoral candidates receive their diploma covers on stage and are invested with their hoods by their major professors)

Once on stage, hand your name card to one of the divisional readers. As your name is read, you will cross the platform and shake hands with either the Provost or Dean. As you leave the stage, a photographer will take your picture. Faculty marshals will then direct you back to your seat.

Following the conferral of the graduate degrees, the ROTC candidates will be commissioned.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, remain at your seat during the formal recessional of the platform party. University marshals will then lead graduates from the arena.

*Until degrees are conferred, the tassel is worn on the right side of the cap.
